COMMUNITY NEEDS SURVEY FOR SOCIAL ENTERPRISE MODELS

Client: Karnataka Chapter of a Programme of the Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India

The Assignment: The program was born out of the emphasis given in the new education policy of 1986 to the need for education programmes to play a ‘positive interventionist role’ in bringing about women’s equality. It creates self help groups for women to provide them with informal education and better social-economic conditions. It is operational from 1989 and present in nine states. In Karnataka, it is operational in about 2500 villages across 12 districts.

The objective of this project was to conceptualize a broad approach to move women’s empowerment in the State of Karnataka to the next level by exploring options for economic betterment through social enterprise. CoCoon partnered with the organization in the design and implementation of this effort.

Our Approach: We used a three-step approach to identify ‘Social Enterprise Business Model’ ideas.

Step 1 We conducted a detailed village and self help groups survey to understand and gather needs of the women in the villages
Step 2 Extensive questionnaires were designed to gather information from the women in villages and resources coordinators on demographics of the villages, resources available, employment options and other challenges women faced in the villages.

Data was gathered from 1500 women, across 28 taluks and 8 districts
Step 3 This data was complied across all districts and analysed for Social Enterprise Business Models. A set of ideas for Social Enterprise Business Models were shared with the State Programme Director for further action.
